D3433: Lygus sampling comparisons for faba bean in western Canada

In western Canada, Lygus are pests of numerous cultivated plants including canola, seed alfalfa, and buckwheat. These insects can also have an economic impact on pulse crops, especially in faba beans. Their feeding can result in hull perforations, discoloration of the seed coat, seed pitting, or localized tissue wilting and necrosis, producing a quality loss. In the province of Saskatchewan, there are three species of Lygus, Lygus lineolaris, Lygus elisus, and Lygus keltoni, that can damage faba bean depending on the region (Schwarts and Foottit 1998). To identify the incidence and severity of Lygus infestations in Faba bean across Saskatchewan and to assess seasonal variability, a survey since 2017 has been taken in different areas of the province. This poster aims to compare the number of Lygus from 2017 to 2022 at different sites in the province of Saskatchewan.
