D3304: Improved records of diversity and distribution of the Auchenorrhyncha of Rhode Island

Diversity and distribution records of some insect taxa in Rhode Island are known to be lacking. This is the case for the suborder Auchenorrhyncha, which includes leafhoppers, planthoppers, treehoppers, and froghoppers (referred to as “hoppers” hereafter). Field surveys for hoppers were conducted in the spring and summers of 2021 and 2022, for the primary purpose of collecting non-target insects to be used in host range tests for biocontrol of the invasive spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula). This work has a secondary benefit of improving the records of diversity and distribution of many hopper species throughout Rhode Island. Insects were collected from field and forested habitats using sweep nets and beat sheets. New species records and locations from the two years of field collections will be shared in the results. Improved records of hoppers in Rhode Island may enhance our understanding of the biodiversity of Rhode Island and aid in the detection of exotic or pest species.
