The soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura, a native to Asia, was first detected in North Dakota during the summer of 2001, and today poses a serious threat to soybean production. High soybean aphid densities can damage soybean plants by reducing plant height, pod number and yield. Yield reductions have ranged from 12 to 45%. Foliar insecticides are the most common strategy used by growers to control soybean aphid. Since 2008, NDSU Extension Specialists have observed location and population estimates throughout the state. This study will evaluate aphid population trends from the 2008 to the 2022 growing season and consider the impact of insecticide resistance, which has been documented within the state. This abstract will be updated as the 2022 season data becomes available.
