D3181: Wings that make waves

This infographic features Parnassius clodius, an alpine butterfly native to the montane meadows of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, and its link to seasonal and ecological changes. These nonmigratory butterflies emerge as caterpillars after snow melt, which survive by feeding on Dicentra uniflora, Steer's head, an herbaceous perennial that appears for a short time in the spring. The synchronized timing of caterpillar emergence and the appearance of Dicentra uniflora could be disrupted by erratic spring weather patterns, including early snow melt followed by spring snowstorms and cold snaps. Although not endangered or threatened, other Parnassius species in Europe are, and threats to their survival include forest encroachment, heavy metal contamination, and decreased snowpack. Research on Parnassius clodius may provide a window into understanding how climate change is affecting montane ecosystems worldwide. Furthermore, this visual presentation is tailored to enfold the general public into the Parnassius Story and is focused on making science broadly accessible and meaningful through visual communication.
