Among the four subterranean termite species in Alabama, the invasive Formosan subterranean termites pose a particular concern for residents and PMPs because they form large colonies, forage under- and above-ground interconnectivity, consume wood faster, and are difficult to control. Since the 1965 report, it has been recorded in about 11 states in the continental U.S. In Alabama, it was first recorded in the coastal port of Mobile in 1985. This poster presents a 22-year (2000-2022) record of its range of expansion and cases of structure and tree infestations, resulting from systematic surveys, public surveillance, PMP reports, and specimens received by Alabama Cooperative Extension Systems.
