D3271: Characterization of antibiosis resistance expression in soybean genotypes to Bemisia tabaci MEAM1 (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae)

The whitefly, Bemisia tabaci MEAM1 (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), is a polyphagous insect considered a serious pest for several economic important crops, including soybean. The control of this pest has become a challenge, mainly due to its resistance to different groups of insecticides. In this sense, the use of resistant genotypes can be an alternative to manage this pest. The objective of this study was to evaluate the biological aspects of whitefly confined in 35 soybean genotypes in order to characterize antibiosis expression. Egg incubation period, nymphal period, egg-adult development period and nymph viability were determined for all genotypes. There was no difference between genotypes for egg incubation period. Fourteen genotypes showed the highest nymphal viability, varying from 74.44% to 88.33%. However, the genotypes 'IAC742832', 'Dowling (PI 548663)', BRS 391, 'TMG 2375 IPRO', 'FTS Campo Mourão RR', 'IAC 24' caused high nymphal mortality (37.22 – 57.22%), suggesting the expression of antibiosis. The nymphal period and egg-adult period were longer for 'TMG 1180', 'Conquista', 'BRB 15.237-527', 'KS 4202', '9909', 'IAC 24' and shorter for 'Dowling (PI 548663)'. According to the results, the genotypes 'IAC742832', 'Dowling (PI 548663)', BRS 391, 'TMG 2375 IPRO', 'FTS Campo Mourão RR', 'IAC 24' showed high levels of antibiosis to B. tabaci MEAM1. Genotypes 'TMG 1180', 'Conquista', 'BRB 15.237-527', 'KS 4202' and '9909', expressed moderate levels of resistance. In conclusion, further studies will be carried out to determine possible correlations between chemical compounds present in resistant genotypes and the expression of antibiosis.
